A submersible is a device which has a hermetically sealed motor close-coupled to the pump body. The whole assembly is submerged in the fluid to be pumped. Submersible pumps are found in many applications. Single stage pumps are used for drainage, sewage pumping, general industrial pumping and slurry pumping. They are also popular with pond filters. Multiple stage submersible pumps are typically lowered down a borehole and most typically used for residential, commercial, municipal and industrial water extraction (abstraction), water wells and in oil wells.

Other uses for submersible pumps include sewage treatment plants, seawater handling, firefighting (since it is flame retardant cable), water well and deep well drilling, offshore drilling rigs, artificial lifts, mine dewatering, and irrigation systems.

The main advantage of this type of pump is that it prevents pump cavitation, a problem associated with a high elevation difference between pump and the fluid surface. Submersible pumps push fluid to the surface as opposed to jet pumps having to pull fluids. Submersibles are more efficient than jet pumps. Two other advantages of submersible pumps are: they are much quieter and inherently more difficult to steal – an important consideration in South Africa when setting up a water system or water tanks.

Following on this line of thought the logical next step was to manufacture pumps that could be submerged in the water they are pumping, thereby ensuring the benefits of positive pressure. In order to operate underwater the motor of the pump is hermetically sealed to exclude water and avoid an electrical short circuit. This significantly increases the cost of a pump relative to the volume of water it is capable of pumping, and seems to shorten their life span at the same time.

The pumps are specially designed to be submerged in a liquid and are often fitted with a submersible motor which is hermetically sealed. Motor and pump are connected with a coupling, from the pump shaft to the motor shaft. Power to the motor is fed through one or more flexible watertight cable.
